Celebrating 50 years of Romance

About the RNA

Romance is big business. Millions of readers… hundreds of millions of books. Billions of words. That’s a lot of talented authors and a lot of great books.

In these pages, you can explore the world of romantic fiction. We all think we know what love is—but just what is a romantic novel? That’s a harder question than you might think.

In the United Kingdom, romantic fiction comes under the banner of the Romantic Novelists’ Association. Find out more about what we do to promote our genre, and to encourage new writers.

2010 is the RNA‘s Golden Anniversary. The Association is very proud of its long history, and we hope you’ll join us as we look back at our journey and the people who led the way.

To mark this golden milestone, the RNA has some anniversary celebrations we’d like to share with you, beginning with a very special golden book which, in many ways, shows why we read and write romantic fiction.

It's a fact

Barbara Cartland is regarded as the world’s most prolific author with over 700 titles. She wrote 550 + of those after leaving the Romantic Novelists’ Association in 1965 – in protest against the word ‘Romantic' in its title.
