Conference 2010:  First line workshop

Report published 28 July 2010

I was fortunate to attend the second session of Diane Pearson’s First Line Workshop. The word had obviously spread as RNA members crept into the room requesting permission to attend a session they had not signed up for.

Listening to Ms. Pearson read and dissect the opening lines of published books and the work of participating RNA members was a master class in writing. The word of the moment seemed to be Tantalise. We were given examples and suggestions for tantalising editors and readers alike. Ms. Pearson broke down each sentence into words and demonstrated the effect and underlining power of the written word. I for one was stunned by the sheer brilliance of our speaker.

Audience participation in the session was fast paced and informed. Ms. Pearson also covered Synopsis writing, due, we were informed, to the demands made by the audience at Ms. Pearson’s first conference session. The NWS members almost broke their wrists taking notes at speed as advice and information was dispensed into our eager ears.

Memories of past RNA meetings were discussed as Ms. Pearson and RNA members shared their experiences. As Ms. Pearson ended the session with charm and grace I wanted to beat my breast and cry ‘I am not worthy’.

I learned so much from this session. I crawled away clutching my notes fired with fresh ambition.
