Love Story of the Year
This award recognises the best in Category Romance -novels that centre on the developing love affair between the hero and heroine. These stories are usually published in an easily recognisable format, with several books of similar type and length being released on a regular schedule. Serials in magazines are also eligible.
The award was previously called the Romance Prize and the winner receives the Betty Neels Rose Bowl, donated by Harlequin Mills and Boon, to hold for one year.
A panel of readers, who are members of the public, not aspiring or published novelists, read the books and rank them, based on such criteria as most enjoyable, good plot and characters. They are looking for books which touch their hearts.
A shortlist of the most highly rated books is then read by the final judges, who are professional writers, often working in other creative fields such as film making. They select the overall winner.
