Full and Associate membership

Full Membership of the Association is open to all published writers of romantic novels and full length serials of at least 30,000 words. (Vanity and self-publishing do not qualify.)

Associate Membership is open to publishers, editors, literary agents, booksellers, librarians or any others having a close professional connection with novel writing and publishing.

Subscriptions are due each January. The subscription period runs from 1st January to 31st December and there are no part-year discounts:

  • £50 for Full Members (£57 non EU based)
  • £60 for Associate Members (£67 non EU based)

To be eligible for full membership:

The author must have an enforceable commercial contract from a publishing company, which must be properly established as a bona fide business in an appropriate jurisdiction. This contract may relate to print and/or electronic media.

The novel must have been through a selection process and the Association may require reassurance on this.

There is no requirement for an advance but the author should receive royalties.

The author should bear no part of the cost of preproduction costs or processes, nor undertake tasks that relate to: editing, copy editing, typesetting or other production costs, cover art or any commercial distribution tasks or costs (excluding book sales at author events such as signings or conferences).

If a pre-contract edit is a condition of contract, not at the expense of the publisher, that will constitute the writer bearing a preproduction cost. NB This refers only to an edit, not appraisal or critique.

Breadth of distribution is desirable.

Election to full membership is at the discretion of the Management Committee.

Signing up for Full or Associate membership

To sign up for Full or Associate membership of the Association please fill out the
membership form and send it to the Membership Secretary at the address specified in the form:

You can make payment via a personal cheque included with the membership form. Full and Associate members may also pay by standing order at a reduction of £5.
