New Writers' Scheme

The RNA is pleased to welcome unpublished writers of romantic fiction in all genres into its unique New Writers’ Scheme. The scheme opens in January each year and can accept only 250 members.

Please note the New writers Scheme is now full for 2016. No new applications can be accepted until 2017.

Applications for are by e-mail to the NWS Organiser.

Applications will be on a first come, first served basis. No waiting list is maintained.

If you are a new member of the scheme, you will be asked to complete a short membership form and submit it with your payment, once your place has been reserved by email.

The membership fee of £120 (£130 for non-EU members) allows unpublished authors to take part in all RNA activities and also submit a manuscript of a full-length novel for appraisal.

The New Writers’ Scheme Organiser sends each new writer a membership pack giving details on how and when to submit the manuscript. In a change from previous years, due to changes in our process, manuscripts for the New Writers’ Scheme 2016 cannot be submitted until after 1st February 2016.

All manuscripts must be received by the NWS Organiser by the end of August.

The Organiser has a team of more than 60 readers who are authors with extensive publishing histories in various types of romantic novel. The scripts are sent to an appropriate reader who provides a report that may include, for example, comments on plotting, characterisation and structure. The reports are intended to be honest and constructive suggestions from a published novelist—they point out flaws but also offer advice based on experience. Please note that this is a scheme for romantic novels, ones where romantic content and love interest are integral to the story. The readers cannot comment on non-romance genres. We are also unable to provide critiques of books aimed specifically at the US market.

The Organiser will advise and support authors whose report indicates that their novel is ready, or almost ready, to be submitted to a publisher and agent. Scripts which have been entered into the NWS and subsequently published as a debut novel by a NWS member are eligible for the Joan Hessayon New Writers’ Scheme Award.
