Ballot Regarding RNA Membership for Independent/Self-Published Authors

Ballot result.

Thursday 22 May 2014

The RNA committee, aware that the publishing industry has gone through huge changes in the last few years, felt the need to consider revision of RNA membership rules.

The committee believed that the fairest way to deal with this was by holding a postal ballot, in accordance with our Constitution, which would allow us to change the Constitution if a 66% majority (two thirds) of full members who voted was achieved.

The ballot was held during February/March, with a 31st March deadline, and the result was as follows:-

Total number of forms sent out to Full members:  509

Total number of forms returned:  331 (Out of those, 1 abstained, so a total of 330 - or 64.8% - of members voted).

a.  79 = 24% voted to keep the RNA membership categories as they are at present

b.  174 = 52.7% voted to allow independent/self-published authors to become full members of the RNA with voting rights if they fulfilled certain criteria

c.   77 = 23.3% voted to create a new category of RNA membership for independent/self-published authors without voting rights

As there was no 66% majority in any category the membership categories must stay as they are for the present.

Had option b received a sufficient majority, the following criteria would have been voted applicable:-
- Authors would have had to have at least two romantic novels or novellas published (each of a minimum 30,000 words), each book to have sold at least 1,000 copies in any 12 month period
- Each book to have generated an income of at least £1,000 sterling in any 12 month period
- Each book to have been professionally edited
- Long-standing members of the New Writers’ Scheme to be given priority

Our New Writers’ Scheme members were also asked for their opinion (for information purposes only as NWS membership is non-voting), and although only 45% of them returned the forms, the results were as follows:-

a.  22 = 19.1% voted to keep the RNA membership categories as they are at present
b.  64 = 55.6% voted to allow independent/self-published authors to become full members of the RNA with voting rights if they fulfilled certain criteria
c.  29 = 25.3% voted to create a new category of RNA membership for independent/self-published authors without voting rights

It's a fact

Romance readers are predominantly female, but not entirely so – 19% are men.
